Photography Journal | Wildlife, Ranch Life & Pet Stories | Grateful Journeys Photography

Stories from the field, reflections from the trail, and moments shared with wildlife, ranch animals, and beloved pets. Through Grateful Journeys Photography, I explore the beauty of Montana’s landscapes and the quiet connections between animals, people, and the land.

Finding Wonder Close to Home
Finding Wonder Close to Home
I have heard time and time again,

“Well, if I only lived somewhere like Montana, I would have great photos too.”

Okay, fair enough.

I do live in Montana. Big skies, glorious mountain peaks, and wildlife seem to appear around every corner. It is inspiring, and I never want to take that for granted.

But here’s the thing.

I think sometimes we convince ourselves that meaningful photography only exists in the “dream places.” Yellowstone. Glacier. The Tetons. The African safari. Alaska. Places we see splashed across calendars and social media feeds.

And while those places absolutely deserve the admiration, constantly longing for them can quietly distract us from what is already right in front of us.

This young elk wasn’t photographed during some grand adventure. It was simply a quiet encounter because I chose to stay aware, observant, and open to what the day offered.

Photography is less about geography than people think.

It is about noticing.

About slowing down enough to hear movement in the trees. Watching changing light. Learning the rhythms of a nearby field or the backroad you drive every week but rarely stop on.

There’s something else that has stayed with me during the moments when I fall into the trap of thinking I need to be somewhere else to create meaningful work.

I once heard about a photographer who committed to taking one meaningful image every single day for a book project. Just one photograph a day.

Not while traveling through famous national parks.
Not during grand adventures.

Just everyday life.

That idea stayed with me because when only one image matters, you begin looking at the world differently. You stop waiting for “epic.” You start paying attention.

I challenged myself to do the same for a while. I did not accomplish it perfectly, but it changed the way I photograph.

Especially during creative ruts.

It taught me to look harder.
To feel more.
To slow down and notice what I was missing.

Sometimes the problem is not that beauty or stories are absent.

Sometimes we have simply stopped seeing them.

Wildlife does not care whether a place is famous. Nature is unfolding everywhere all the time.

I think one of the greatest things a photographer can do is become deeply familiar with the places close to home. Return often. Watch how the seasons change them. Learn where morning light falls. Pay attention to what appears after the rain, at dusk, or during the quiet in-between moments most people rush past.

Wildlife follows rhythms. Animals are often most active at dawn and sunset, when the light is softer and the world feels quieter. The more time you spend observing those patterns, the more life begins to reveal itself.

And that’s what makes this image so special to me?

Not because it was taken in a famous place.
Not because it required some grand expedition.

But because it reminded me that wonder exists in the ordinary moments and places… if we are willing to look for it.

Yes, dream destinations matter. They inspire us. Push us creatively. Reignite wonder.

But I never want to become so focused on where I wish I was that I fail to appreciate what’s already waiting nearby.

Because sometimes the image that stays with you most…
is the one you almost missed right outside your window.
