Button left North Carolina in warm weather and arrived at our Montana home to more than a foot of snow.
That was quite a welcome.
She wasn’t entirely sure what to do with it at first. But looking at this photograph—the flying ears, the snow spraying around her, that wonderfully happy face—you can see she soon figured it out.
Button had been living with my parents in North Carolina. They loved her, but when they were no longer able to care for her, it was time for her to come live with us. Even with a home waiting and family ready to welcome her, that was a meaningful change for everyone.
There was also the small matter of getting her across the country.
My son, Jonathan, flew from Montana to North Carolina, rented a car, and drove Button all the way home to us. I am so grateful he was willing to give his time and make that long journey for her. Every time I look at this photograph, I think about his kindness, too. This happy moment in our yard began with a plane ticket and a very long drive.
Then came Button’s introduction to Montana snow.
After leaving the warmth of North Carolina, she had some investigating to do. The unfamiliar white stuff took a little getting used to, but her hesitation didn’t last long. Soon she was bounding through it, giving me the chance to capture this moment.
I love photographing animals for exactly this reason. A photograph can hold so much personality. Here is Button, ears in the air, thoroughly enjoying something she hadn’t quite understood a little earlier.
And behind that expression is a family story: my parents’ love for her, Jonathan’s journey, and the beginning of her life here with us.
If you have a dog, take a few photographs the next time something brings out that kind of happiness. A favorite toy. A familiar trail. Someone coming through the door. Get down near their eye level if you can, give them room to play, and see what happens.
Those little moments are part of their story—and yours. Write down a few words about them, too. Years from now, you may be grateful to remember what was happening just beyond the frame.
For us, this photograph will always bring me back to Button’s arrival: a long journey, a snowy welcome, and the joy of watching her begin to feel at home.
Welcome to Montana, Button. We’re so glad you’re here.
