The Story Behind Grateful Journeys Photography
Grateful Journeys Photography was born from a simple belief — that the moments we share with animals and the land around us deserve to be remembered.
I’m Kim Mulholland, a Montana-based photographer drawn to the quiet beauty of wildlife, ranch life, and the deep bonds people share with their animals. Through my work, I aim to capture not just how a moment looks, but how it feels.
Many of the most meaningful moments in life happen quietly — a horse being saddled at first light, a loyal dog waiting beside their person, or wildlife moving through the mist of a Yellowstone morning. These are the moments that inspire my photography.
Grateful Journeys Photography was born from a season of profound change in my life.
After being diagnosed with a massive brain tumor in 2021, everything I once knew shifted — including how I saw the world around me.I found myself returning again and again to nature and to the animals who share our world. Photography became a way to slow down, to notice beauty in unexpected places, and to hold on to moments that might otherwise pass too quickly.
Photographing the Animals We Love
My work is rooted in the deep connection people share with their animals. Whether it’s a beloved family dog, a loyal ranch companion, or a horse that has carried someone across miles of open land, these relationships deserve to be remembered. During sessions, animals are never expected to perform. I work patiently and quietly so they can simply be themselves — because that’s when their true personality appears.
The Landscapes and Wildlife That Inspire It All
Living in Montana means being surrounded by wild places and the animals that call them home. From Yellowstone bison moving through winter mist to quiet mornings on ranch land, these landscapes shape both my photography and my perspective.
They remind me daily why moments with animals — whether wild or deeply loved — are worth preserving.
